Tree Safety & Risk - Homeowner's Guide

With tree safety, all the law asks of tree owners is they be ‘reasonable’ when managing the risk from their trees. Generally, the risk from tree failure is extremely low, and the few trees which are high risk usually have very obvious symptoms. We suggest reasonable tree safety risk management requires no more than you look out for any changes in your tree's appearance which might cause concern.

What might cause concern? Below you can download an abbreviated ‘Hazards From Trees – A General Guide’, published by the Forestry Commission, which has illustrations and descriptions of the kind of symptoms that may mean a tree is dangerous. If your tree shows any of these symptoms it does not necessarily mean the tree has become dangerous, but it would be wise to contact an arborist to have a look.
